Adderstone at Spunk: When Rock came to town
Summer time is time for live concerts, that’s for sure. And this year the café Spunk comes up with some concerts and readings. Yesterday evening a band from Braunschweig called Adderstone made its debut and thus suprised me with their wide range of songs. The three guys played for more than two hours. That’s the real spirit to me. Thanks to the Spunk that you arrange for such good events.
Rock music with a black cowl on
I have not heard of Adderstone since friday. Despite or maybe because of that I had a conception on how they might look like. I took it that as rock musicians they would wear black leather clothes – naturally. We have been sitting there for a while when three people enter the scene. They should be the ones, I tell myself. Two guys and a chick that reminds me of Beth Ditto. The two fellows: one has a blond pony tail and a beard, the other one has dark and shorter hair and a very cool expression on his face. Close, but no cigar. It turns out that the three are actually musicians but in another band.
Is that the Turkish waiter?
Shortly after that a slender, medium-sized guy, type “Turkish waiter” comes into the Spunk. I do not pay much attention on the guy, he does not look like a typical rock musician anyway. As there is not much going I notice the elderly couple sitting at a table in front of me. Spontaneously I call them “Heino and Hannelore”. I can’t help myself, my fantasie is overreacting. Are they going to watch the rock show? I would suppose them on a cruise ship enjoying a captain’s dinner. Well, I am wrong for the second time this evening: the two of them are still there when the band begins to play.
Slowly but surely the courtyard of the Spunk gets crowded. It 7:00 p.m. already and still I do not know who is going to enter the stage. A huge guy sits down close to us wearing short trousers and a T-Shirt. We find out that he is the drummer. The bassist crouches at the front of the stage. With a delay of 20 minutes the event starts. Oh shit, my Turkish waiter in disguise is the singer of the band, Christian Nölke is his name.
The hat is circling
At first the band acts a little bit shy and restrained. That changes quickly when the musicians realize that the audience likes their music. “Hannelore” starts to mover her feet according to the beat and I think I saw Heino also twitching. The first houer with Adderstone goes by very quickly, Nölke performs as hell.
In the meantime the place is packed. A hat collecting money for the band is cirling, everbody spends as much as he can. I am sure that Hannelore put a high note in an envelope into it and speculates on a date with the singer. No, just joking. After a break Nölke and Co. continue for another hour. It is a nice and entertaining evening. I guess we will be coming back soon.
