Ein Wochenende der Kunst in Braunschweig
This march does not do what I want: it is colt, mostly grey and it rains a lot. In other words, it is not really hiking or bicycling weather. That’s why we decided on a weekend of art. Cinema, a themed tour within the Botanical Garden and an opening are on our programme. We start with Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans on saturday. Possibly this is the most personal film by the Hollywood producer, but not necessarily his best though, in my mind. At least I head some snorring from my seatmate.
The Fabelmans – not really fabulous
It is saturday afternoon. One of the few sunny days this march on which the temperatures are double-digit. We still go the movies. We choose “The Fabelmans”, the already highly acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. We will need some steadiness as the playing time is about 2.5 hours. The cinema hall is moderately stuffed this afternoon. The film starts with a lead text. The director itself says some personal words. Then, the movie begins.
Whereas Spielberg’s growing passion for the movie business is on focus at first, the perspective changes to the relationsship with his mother. I realize after some time that the film does not really trammel me. And it looks like I am not the only one as I am hearing some snorring from the side. Maybe Spielberg lost his distance to the stuff as it is too personal. Even though the film portrays well the social conditions of the 1950ies, the appeal is lacking. After the said 2.5 hours we are leaving the place with mixed feelings.
