Are you looking for play, fund and excitement without having to buy the famous Kinder Surprise? If so, I have something for you. Here comes the extra: collecting stamps in the Wolfenbüttel area. Sounds boring to you? It’s not at all. Play: collecting stamps. Fun: drinking coffee at Willeckes Lust. Excitement: a hike along the former german-german border between Hornburg and Rhoden at the Kleiner Fallstein. The discovery of the day? Birdhouses painted in the colours of Germany’s flag.

History in stone
We start our tour on a very cold and still muddy Sunday morning. The cold surprises me. The weather forecast promised us blue skies and sun for today. However, the sun is a long time coming. Behind the place Halchter I drag my jacket closer around my body, but even my feet are icecold by now. But I will do everything for a good stamp experience. Via a country road we reach the windmill at the Bungenstedter tower, our first goal. We quickly collect our stamp. The winds are chilly a longer stay is not desired.

We hurry up back to the car at the end of the country road. We continue to Börßum targeting the historical train station. We are surprised by the beautiful, impressive building rich in history.

The Monopteros of Heiningen
After the extensive admiration oft the train station at Börßum we pay a visit to another historical sight: the Monopteros of Heiningen, our third stamp post of the day. Admittedly the term Monopteros is new to me. We learn that the name is Greek and labels a rotunda with columns. From the hill the building stands on weh ave a beautiful view over the landscape. The building is being used for funeral services at the nearbye cemetery in the woods.

Kaiserpfalz Werla
By car we drive to Werlaburgdorf. From here we follow the cycle path to the Kaiserpfalz. There is little left from the former fortified palace. A tower, some walls that’s it. The archeological park that belongs to the compound is quiet interesting. We make a little tour. Meanwhile the sun made it through the clouds. Early-summer temperatures are pleasing us. We collect our fourth stamp, enjoy the sun and a small lunch break before we move on to the half-timbered city of Hornburg.

Where are the coffee places?
At Hornburg we walk to the Biedermeierhaus. Our fifth stamp of the day. The place was turned into a museum, however it is closed until Eastern. We are looking out for a coffee place but there is nothing to find. Everything is closed or has been shut down. So, what shall we do? We leave Hornburg and move on the „Kleiner Fallstein“.

A birdhouse coloured red, white and yellow
Suddenly we come across the sign „woodland restaurant Willeckes Lust“. Well, I have been here before. Let’s go inside. We manage to get a window seat. Like a habit I order my coffee and baileys. After the wonderful break we set out to the last stage of today: the former border tower located above the village Rhoden. The path is very nice. On our way we pass by an information point on the former German-German border. We also discover two birdhouses, which are coloured black, red, yellow – just like the flag of Germany. A real eyecatcher.

The landscape is illuminated by the evening sun when we reach the stamp post „Kleiner Fallstein“. Once again we drag out our booklets and for the last time the ink pad wets at first the treasured stamping before it lands on the pre-cut box.

Accompanied by the last sun beams of the day we reach our car and look back on a wonderful day.
