The Allgäu is an absolute place of longing for me. Well, of course, the Allgäu is no place in itself. It is a landscape which stretches over Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Also the surrounding regions are nice because the Allgäu borders Lake Constance and Austria. Just around the corner you find the Tannheimer Tal and the Kleinwalsertal. The Allgäu has a lot to offer for its tourists: beautiful villages, soft hills, wonderful lakes, spectacular panoramic views, high mountains and lazy cows. It’s an eldorado for all hiking fans, just like me. And not only for athletic reasons but also for culinary ones.

24 brands of beer
We set our camp at Bad Hindelang. Both, the village itself and the holiday flat are a lucky strike. We could not have find a better starting point for our hikes. Right at the first day we cycle to Hinterstein. On our way we discover the Ostrach and a nice wooden bridge which crosses the river. At Hinterstein stop at the hotel and restaurant „Grüner Hut“ and inaugurate our holiday week with an Aperol Sprit and a beer. But it is not any beer because when you ask the landlord for a cold one you will be confronted with the question: „Which one? We have a choice of more than 24 brands of beer.“

Culinary treats at the Obere Mühle
Upon a stroll we come across the restaurant „Obere Mühle“ (upper mill). Glancing at the menu we are enchanted. Dumplings and cheese in different variations. My heart is melting like butter in a pan. We want to make a reservation. But we are in for some disappointment, the place is booked up. However, they ask me to leave my mobile number in case somebody cancels his booking. Right on the next day we receive the call we longed for. On Ascencion day we sit in the charming garden of the inn and spoil ourselves. We order Allgäuer cheese soup as a starter. For the main course I choose a vegetarian triology: Käsknodel (chees dumplings), Kässpatzen (cheese spaetzle) and ravioli. It is a special treat, for sure. Even though we are already full up we order some desert, it is simply too tempting. I decide on the „Dreierlei of the white Toblerone“ with fresh strawberries (white chocolate served in three different ways). It is so delicious. However, upon leaving the table and sitting on the bike I realized how stuffed I really am. The way back is quite an effort, but who cares. The menu is worth the stomachache.

What kind of plant is this?
I am so glad that there is an app for plant identification. The numerous flowers along the way and on the mountain pastures are so beautiful that it would be a shame to ignore them. So, I fetch my mobile and identify all the marvellous plants around me. And we discover a lot: spurge, geranium, helleborine, gentian, white, dryas, doronicum, white butterbur, marsh marigold and yellow lady’s slipper.
